We've met so many wonderful people along the way, and are honored that we will be able to share this special day with some of them. Everyone has their story, let us introduce you to a few of our couples!
Ken & Clay
We met the day after Thanksgiving in 1989 at a post-holiday get-together with mutual friends. We were both going through tumultuous times in our personal lives, and the last thing we wanted was complicate matters with a relationship. That actually made the courtship less complex – we were attracted to one another but became best friends first. Our first official date – going to see "Last Exit to Brooklyn" at the Angelika – wasn't until February 1990.
We acknowledged that we were in love with each other for the first time on May 26, 1990, while dancing at the Pyramid. As would be expected, we were both late for work the next morning and in a daze for the next month. After a couple of years of learning to negotiate and compromise – still very much an ongoing process – we knew we were soul mates destined to spend the rest of our lives together.
Marriage was never on our minds – the possibility was so remote – until Vermont passed civil unions, the Netherlands became the first country to enshrine marriage equality, and the other dominoes started to fall. Anticipating darker days for the LGBT community, we had a civil union in magically snowy Vermont in January 2001, before Bush was inaugurated. We thought about getting married in Massachusetts or California (before Prop 8) or Connecticut, but we're New Yorkers, not by birth but choice, and we decided we wanted to get married in our home town. We would wait unless it looked like it wouldn't happen. Thanks New York! We WERE getting tired of waiting.
We have the best friends in the world and wouldn't trade our life together for anything.< Return to list
